- Death Mage 234 - The battle begins, and a fight between a god’s servant and a subordinate of the Demon King
Tyler P. ($150) is our sponsor for today, thank you very much. Hope you’re all staying safe and healthy.
Alarm bells rang across the city of Morksi, and flags rose at the earl’s residence and at the watchtowers to signal that a large monster rampage was occurring. People ran about frantically in panic.
Grim expressions were worn both by the people evacuating, and the people staying behind to defend the city – the soldiers, knights and adventurers.
When news of the monster rampage first reached the city, nobody had thought that the situation would be this serious.
After all, Morksi was a city of commerce with thirty thousand permanent residents. Its walls were sturdy, and it was defended by many guards. And most importantly, the constant presence of large numbers of adventurers in the city meant that the people didn’t worry much for their own safety.
Indeed, if the monster rampage had occurred from a D-class Dungeon, the city of Morksi would have withstood it with ease. Several merchants and adventurers unfortunate enough to be outside the city’s walls at the time may have lost their lives, but there would have been no casualties inside the city.
If it had been a C-class Dungeon, there would have been considerable damage, but even so, the city would have avoided being destroyed.
The Adventurers’ Guild would send out an emergency commission to mobilize adventurers who would repel the monsters and protect the city. Since it was winter, there were plenty of adventurers capable of earning their keep currently staying in the city. There would be enough fighting forces to keep the city safe – that was what everyone had thought.
But such notions had been deeply cracked the moment the reports of Dragons came from the watchtowers… Not Wyverns, but multiple actual Dragons measuring more than ten meters in length, flying through the sky.
And each time they received detailed information regarding the monsters approaching the city, the people’s faces grew paler and paler.
When it became known that the Dragons were Thunder Dragons, emergency commissions were put up not only at the Adventurers’ Guild, but at the Mages’ Guild and Tamers’ Guild as well. All of the knights serving the house of the earl had been summoned, and the soldiers had begun moving to evacuate the people.
And then there had been a report that even the weakest monsters were a horde of dozens of Rank 5 Ogre Soldiers, led by a Rank 7 Ogre High General. Upon hearing this news, Earl Morksi had steeled his resolve, knowing that today was the day he would die.
There wasn’t a single B-class adventurer – an adventurer capable of defeating a Rank 7 monster alone – in this city.
The Dungeons around the city of Morksi were C-class or lower. Thus, most adventurers who ascended to B-class would move to other cities in search of places where they could make greater use of their skills.
Until today, that would have been fine. There were no monsters near the city that would require a B-class adventurer to exterminate.
But today was different.
Most of the city’s people hadn’t been told the details, but… even from this distance, they could hear the roars of the Dragons and Giants. They could see adventurers and knights running about with grim expressions, and the soldiers were telling the people to evacuate. Everyone knew how serious the situation was.
A group of teenage boys and girls who appeared to be adventurers ran towards the gate.
“L-let us inside the gate!” one of them shouted desperately.
“This way! Use the gate over here!” said the city guard Kest, waving the adventurers over to a gate that was ordinarily only used to welcome messengers from nobles in other cities. “Once you’re inside, don’t stop and keep going!”
“The old lady, the old lady used herself as bait so that we could escape…!” one of the girls gasped, out of breath.
Kest couldn’t tell her, ‘Alright, we’ll go and help her.’
“For that old lady’s sake, you have to focus on yourself and those who are important to you!” he said instead.
Those were the only words he could manage as he gave her a push on the back into the gate. Perhaps his diligent training had paid off; his physical abilities had improved remarkably. But in the end, he was just a single city guard. He wasn’t capable of any heroic feats that bards wrote songs about.
“… He’s still not back?” said a senior guard.
“No, though he should be near the city,” Kest replied, trying to suppress his sense of powerlessness.
He was waiting for Vandalieu, who was outside the city somewhere nearby.
The Beast-kin Kest had been acquainted with Vandalieu since Vandalieu first arrived in the city, but… that wasn’t the only reason he was waiting for him. Vandalieu had already become a very important person in the city of Morksi… and in the near future, he would become a very important person in the entire Alcrem Duchy.
“His apprentices and familiars have apparently already joined our forces, so… he should be coming back. I don’t know what he’s doing, staying out on his own,” said Kest, but he had a worried look on his face and his ears were twitching in all directions.
To the majority of the city’s residents, Vandalieu was nothing more than an extremely talented Tamer. He was certainly not an ‘Elder Dragon Emperor’ that Dragons cowered before, a master of ‘Unarmed Fighting Technique’ who was capable of crushing the spines of Pure-breed Vampires beneath his feet, or a Demon King who devoured evil gods.
Kest, who was nothing more than a city guard, was no exception to this; it wasn’t surprising for him to be worried about Vandalieu.
“He might actually be taming the Dragons and Giants. For some reason, it seems that several of the Dragons and Giants killed each other before they could reach the city,” said the senior guard.
“No, that’s… that might actually be possible,” said Kest.
The news of the mysterious group attacking Vandalieu and his companions, witnessed at the watchtowers, hadn’t reached Kest and his senior yet.
“More importantly, Kest, you’re still a rookie. You can go and join the guys guarding the evacuating civilians,” said the senior guard. “I’m not married, so I’m fine to stay here, but you… Your family is evacuating, aren’t they? Why don’t you go with them?”
Earl Morksi had resigned to the fact that the city of Morksi would not be able to escape destruction, but that didn’t mean that he had given up on the lives of its residents. He was planning to gather all the forces he could to fight off the monster horde, and use the time they bought to evacuate the civilians under the guard of the younger guards and adventurers.
If the civilians were evacuated too quickly, it was possible that the monster horde’s attention would be drawn towards them, so their escape would happen after the battle broke out inside the city.
The senior guard was urging Kest to join them.
“No, I’ll stay behind. Even if we escape from the city, we won’t get away unharmed with Thunder Dragons and Wyverns flying around,” said Kest.
“Well, that’s true, but… you’ll have better chances of surviving than staying here,” said the senior guard.
“It’s alright. My family is being protected by the people of Starving Wolf Security,” said Kest.
The Starving Wolf Security was the security company started by the ‘Starving Wolf’ Michael (Miles Rouge) with the thugs of the entertainment district and slums.
Not much time had passed since it was created, but the former thugs now wore uniforms with heart symbols and were surprisingly well-organized. Though they still had rough tones of speech and less-than-ideal manners, the people considered them to be dependable.
But fighting monsters would be too much for them, so it had been decided that they would join the evacuating civilians. They had already done as much work as the city guards, guiding and directing people from the slums and entertainment district to be evacuated.
… Having lost much of the people’s trust with the incident involving Aggar, the city guards had to admire their work.
“I know that, but you won’t make much of a difference joining us here,” said the senior guard.
“So you say, but you lost to me in our sparring match the other day, didn’t you?” said Kest.
“You’ve gone and said it, huh,” the senior guard chuckled. “We’re shutting this gate now! We’re going to the guardroom to get our crossbows and climbing onto the walls! Kest, come with me!”
“Yes, sir!”
As they shut the gate, forces were gathering outside the main gate to meet the monsters in battle. Not inside the gate, but outside it.
If the monster horde consisted of Goblins and Kobolds, or even Huge Boars, Hellhounds and Ogres, the sturdy walls would have withstood the monsters’ attacks.
But the soldiers’ foes were flying Dragons and Mountain Giants that stood taller than the walls. If they tried to hold the city while relying on the walls, the Dragons would simply fly over, and the Giants would easily knock the walls down by throwing their bodies at them.
With that being the case, it was better to gather forces outside the gate, with the walls put to better use by lining them with those who were skilled in long-range attacks – archers and mages.
“Just yesterday, these walls built by our ancestors seemed so sturdy and reliable. To think that I would be dying with the walls to my back today… Life is full of unpredictable things,” Earl Isaac Morksi murmured to himself.
He was wearing a hastily-procured suit of armor and a helmet, with a sword that he wasn’t accustomed to using hanging at his waist.
The Morksi house of earls ruled over an inland city of commerce; Isaac had no experience in leading an army in battle. He was just a decoration; the real commanders would be the leader of the Knights’ Order and Berard, the Guild Master of the Adventurers’ Guild.
Even so, the fact that the lord of the city was remaining behind rather than evacuating would raise the troops’ morale considerably.
“Please retreat to the basement of the Guild at some point during the battle, my lord. Monsters become less adept at detecting hiding humans during rampages, so you may be able to survive,” said Berard.
Isaac smiled bitterly and shook his head. “Even if I were to survive, if I’m unlucky, the building will collapse and I’ll be trapped inside the basement and left to wait until I starve to death. And I have made a great error. If I survived, I would be too ashamed to meet His Excellency the Duke.”
“A great error… With all due respect, nobody would have expected that something like this would happen,” said Berard.
“That is correct. It is true that this situation can only be described as a monster rampage, but it exceeds all common sense,” agreed the Guild Master of the Mages’ Guild.
Indeed, monster rampages from Dungeons were considered to be disasters, but they were also considered to be disasters that occurred due to rulers who were negligent in making adequate preparations.
However, in this case, a B-class Dungeon had appeared in a Devil’s Nest that didn’t contain very strong monsters, and a monster rampage had occurred from that Dungeon almost immediately afterwards – like some kind of cruel joke.
With that being the case, no number of adventurers reducing monster populations inside the Devil’s Nest would have made any difference.
However, it was also true that Duke Alcrem would look for someone to take responsibility for the loss of Morksi, a center of commerce in the duchy, to a monster rampage.
“It matters not. After all, it is the duty of those born to nobility to offer their own lives when the time calls for it. And I will have my own family evacuate with the rest of the citizens under the protection of some knights. If I fulfill my responsibility as a noble here, His Excellency the Duke may spare the house of Morksi, leaving it as a house of honorary nobles, or merely lower our court rank to a house of viscounts,” said Isaac, laughing out loud.
Though he was giving up his life, he was doing so out of self-interest. If he were to die, the duke was unlikely to punish his children who were still young.
“More importantly, how many forces have we managed to gather?” Isaac asked.
“The Adventurers’ Guild has posted an emergency commission for adventurers of C-class and above. We let the adventurers of D-class and below decide their own fates,” said Berard. “We have gathered twenty C-class adventurers and fifty D-class adventurers.”
Each C-class adventurer was capable of defeating Rank 5 and Rank 6 monsters. But it would be difficult for them to defeat a Rank 7 monster. For D-class adventurers, it was out of the question.
However, it was possible that even C-class adventurers could defeat monsters of Rank 7 and higher if they formed a party.
“The Mages’ Guild also recruited volunteers. Users of offensive magic have been positioned on the city’s walls, and those capable of using healing magic and enchantments have been positioned in the rear,” said the Guild Master of the Mages’ Guild. “And Bachem, the Guild Master of the Tamers’ Guild, is on standby with his familiar.
The Mages’ Guild had recruited volunteers as well, and the head of the Morksi branch of the Tamers’ Guild was already on his Huge Wyvern, on standby to take down the enemies in the sky.
Incidentally, the children of the orphanage were naturally among the citizens to be evacuated. It was perhaps strange to others that the orphans were so calm while the adults around them were so restless.
“There was also one volunteer sent by a merchant,” added the Guild Master of the Mages’ Guild.
“Yes, the ‘Strong Sword’ Rodriguez, isn’t it? I have heard of his name. Though he is no longer an adventurer, we are fortuitous to have someone with the skills of a B-class adventurer on our side,” said Isaac.
Rodriguez was the man hired as a bodyguard by the merchant who had made a business offer of establishing a Ghoul brothel in disguise to Darcia. He was standing at the forefront of the ranks of adventurers, staring calmly at the monster horde that was gradually approaching.
Ordinarily, Rodriguez joining the battle would not improve the situation much.
A B-class adventurer was capable of defeating a Dragon or a Mountain Giant alone. But against two or more Dragons and Giants, the odds of victory dropped drastically.
Rodriguez was not a currently-active adventurer; he was a former B-class adventurer. He sometimes disposed of bandits and monsters appearing on the highway in order to protect his employer. But he rarely fought against powerful monsters these days.
Rodriguez himself was aware that his skills had dulled compared to when he was actively working as an adventurer. Perhaps he would only be able to move as well as a C-class adventurer.
But Rodriguez didn’t think for a single moment that he would die here, and this belief was no delusion or escape from reality.
He saw Darcia, along with the Ghouls… Basdia and Zadiris, emerge from within the gate to join Simon and the others.
They’re here. The real fighters with the strength of a B-class adventurer, or even higher, Rodriguez thought to himself, now absolutely certain that he would survive.
The people who knew of Darcia began murmuring amongst themselves. She was famous as the person who gave regular sermons at the Communal Church, as the worker who sold food on Vida Street in the entertainment district, and as the mother of Vandalieu.
“Well, if it isn’t Darcia-dono. You are not an adventurer, so there is no need for you to risk your life here…” said Isaac.
“I have many friends in this city, and my son has not returned yet. And I was quite proficient in disposing of monsters in my home village,” said Darcia. “These girls will be helping me as well,” she said, gesturing towards Basdia and Zadiris.
“We’re Van’s familiars, after all,” said Basdia.
“Well, the Tamer himself isn’t here, but… there should be no problems. We are outside the city, in any case,” said Zadiris.
The staff and axe that Zadiris and Basdia were currently holding had never been shown to anyone in the city before.
“And the battle may not be as hopeless as it appears, my lord,” said Darcia.
Isaac looked back towards the horde of monsters to see that the number of Dragons heading towards the city had decreased considerably. He could not relax his sense of caution, as some of the Dragons were heading into the grassy plains, but… it was certainly good news that the city’s defenses would have to fight against less Dragons at the same time.
“This battle… may be winnable,” said Isaac. “Incidentally, Darcia-dono, why has your son not returned? And where is the ‘Starving Wolf?’”
Some already knew that the ‘Starving Wolf’ Michael was as capable as a B-class adventurer; he would become a significant addition to the fighting forces. And although Vandalieu was only known as a capable Tamer, the earl had placed some hopes in him and his mysterious nature.
“My lord, that is a little…” murmured one of the knights, disapproving of the earl’s reliance on a boy who was just over ten years of age.
There were some who thought like him, but it was commonly known that familiars did not perform to their potential without their Tamers’ commands, and the situation was dire. There were not many who disagreed with the earl’s words.
“Umm, Michael-san has a little business to attend to… and my son remains in the fields with his friends,” said Darcia.
“W-what! That is… Could it be that he is the reason that some of the Dragons and Giants are heading towards the fields and others have killed each other?!” Isaac gasped.
“Yes. I think he knows how to mix poisons that confuse Dragons and Giants. He’s good at alchemy, after all,” said Darcia.
Simon’s eyes opened wide as he took in Darcia’s lies, while Natania looked away.
“Such a poison exists?!” exclaimed the Guild Master of the Mages’ Guild. “And to think that he can administer the poison to flying Dragons and Giants…!”
He was the one trying to use his Guild to pressure Vandalieu in order to prevent him from distributing artificial limbs at a cheap price like he had done with Simon and Natania, as this would decrease the prices of Magic Item artificial limbs.
Indeed, there were some in the slums who suffered from disabilities and did not have full freedom of movement, and some of these people were missing limbs. Considering the things that Vandalieu had done in this city, it was certainly easy to imagine Vandalieu distributing artificial limbs to such individuals.
The truth, however, was that the artificial limbs created by Vandalieu and Tarea were different from the Magic Items created by the alchemists of the Mages’ Guild. There was almost no meaning in the pressure that the Mages’ Guild was trying to apply on Vandalieu.
“Yes, it is a poison made with an old, secret recipe. My son has been crushing Magic Stones with a mortar and pestle, training in the ‘Alchemy’ Skill, since he was three years old. And he learned the ‘Throwing’ Skill from a warrior in the village before he turned seven,” Darcia said.
The truth was that such a poison did not exist, and it was not some village elder or warrior of a Dark Elf village that had trained Vandalieu, but the Ghoul leader and her daughter whom she could currently see in the corner of her vision, wearing proud expressions.
But she could not simply say, ‘My son turned them into Undead and is controlling them,’ so she didn’t have a choice but to lie.
“My word… What kind of poison is it?!” the Guild Master of the Mages’ Guild asked.
“I’m sorry, but the poison is very difficult to handle, and I have never touched it myself. My son is the one who handles it. But nobody expected Dragons and Giants to appear, so he likely doesn’t have much of it on him,” said Darcia, panicking a little on the inside as she continued to lie.
She was not particularly skilled at lying; even now, she was desperately struggling to maintain an expression that wasn’t stiff.
“If such a poison was available, it could turn the tides of battle, but…” the Guild Master of the Mages’ Guild muttered in dissatisfaction.
“Darcia-dono did say that it is difficult to handle, isn’t it? Be more considerate to Darcia-dono’s feelings, will you? I am sure that she is desperate to run to her son’s side, but she is remaining here to fight at our side!” Earl Morksi said, reprimanding the Mages’ Guild’s Guild Master.
“M-my apologies.”
Darcia let out a sigh of relief. “No, it’s fine. More importantly, we should prepare ourselves.”
She turned her gaze towards the approaching horde of Dragons, Giants, Ogres and Trolls.
Their numbers had decreased considerably from the original estimates, and many of the Dragons and Giants were wounded from having fought against the ones that Vandalieu had turned into Zombies… In fact, although there had been more than ten Thunder Dragons, there were now only three.
The faces of Simon and the soldiers became a little less pale as they began to see hope. But on the other hand, Darcia was a little troubled.
The monsters were the kind that she could clean up with ease if she went all-out.
Of course, she wouldn’t be able to use her ‘Chaos’ Skill that transformed her body, but even so, she would not struggle whatsoever in defeating monsters the likes of Thunder Dragons and Mountain Giants.
But if she were to defeat them too quickly, it would cause trouble for the confrontation between Vandalieu and the reincarnated individuals.
“What shall we do? Will we be able to prolong the battle without causing any casualties and exterminate the monsters over a long time? I’m not so confident that we can,” said Darcia.
“Well, neither am I, but… let’s think of it as supervising the others’ Leveling. Things should work out if we focus on defending and wounding the monsters to toy around with them rather than defeating them, even though it’s a little rude to the others who have decided to defend the city with their lives,” said Basdia.
“Of course, being able to do so will look unnatural without some acting, and protecting this many people will be impossible unless we put in some effort. Darcia, you should use ‘Familiar Spirit Descent’ and we will transform with our equipment… Be careful to not say a word about magical girls,” Zadiris warned. “If the idea spreads into human society, things will be hopeless.”
“If you defeat all of the monsters, I will add some more monsters from my own labyrinth. They are all Golems, so some may think it strange, but it is unlikely that they will discern the truth,” said Gufadgarn.
Thanks to these reassuring words, Darcia felt a little uneasiness leaving her and raised her staff into the air, facing the approaching horde of monsters. “… ‘Familiar Spirit Descent!’”
Though Darcia was capable of summoning Vida herself, she requested a familiar spirit instead. The familiar spirit, understanding her situation, descended onto her body with a brighter pillar of light than usual.
The heroic spirits working under Hajime Fitun began moving in order to destroy the city of Morksi as they had planned.
They cautiously moved towards the city, surrounding it from all directions.
“Hey, don’t pass under that tree. It’s making an arch shape.”
“How troublesome. This is why I hate space-attribute mages… though I love having them on our side.”
“Legion, the evil god of labyrinths and the other, unknown space-attribute mages from within the Boundary Mountain Range… How nice it must be for our enemies, not having any shortages.”
The heroic spirits were very wary of space-attribute magic. Unlike fire-attribute and wind-attribute magic, space-attribute magic lacked offensive spells. However, it had different strengths from other attributes.
One of those strengths was traps using ‘gates’ that connected two different points in space. Those who became trapped in these were helpless.
The heroic spirits were confident that they would not die even if they were struck by fireballs or lightning attacks unless they had tremendous power behind them. But if they were sent to a physically distant place by space-attribute magic, they were instantly out of the fight.
“It’s fine to enjoy yourselves, but don’t let your guard down. We’re the outnumbered ones here; we lose a lot of our fighting strength if even one member gets sent away somewhere,” one of the heroic spirits said.
As the heroic spirits proceeded forward, there was a corpse that had been torn into pieces and scattered across one of the trees of the forest.
“A victim of the monsters, huh.”
“Hey, don’t touch it.”
“Wait, something is strange. Why has it just been left here? If it was killed by the monster horde, it should have been eaten.”
The corpse was indeed in pieces, and the organs that were supposed to be packed inside the torso were missing, but the limbs and head looked undamaged. If it was the corpse of someone who had been killed by the horde of monsters, it was relatively intact.
Enormous Dragons and Giants might have left such fragments of their prey alone. But the hordes contained Trolls which were known to eat foul things, Ogres and other meat-eating beast-type monsters.
The heroic spirits were well aware of how fierce their appetites were, having trained in a Dungeon full of them. One of the heroic spirits felt uneasy at the fact that such monsters had left meat that was in their path alone.
But it seemed that the other heroic spirits did not agree.
“You’re being overly nervous. I’m sure they didn’t want to eat the tough meat of an old woman, or they were satisfied with just eating the organs.”
“I, on the other hand, am actually relieved to see a corpse. It’s been bothering me that we haven’t seen a single corpse yet.”
The other heroic spirits continued moving without stopping, but the uneasy heroic spirit stopped walking, his uneasiness growing even greater.
“… Now that you mention it, why are there so few corpses?” he wondered.
There were simply too few corpses.
It was winter with snow covering the ground, so it was natural for there to be fewer adventurers hunting in the Devil’s Nests. But considering Morksi’s size, there should have been several dozens of adventurers with no other work to do. It was especially strange considering that the heroic spirits had begun executing their plan in the morning – the time during which adventurers would be heading off to hunt and gather in order to complete the commissions they had accepted at the start of the day.
Thus, there were strangely few adventurer corpses. It was as if someone had evacuated them all.
No, corpses weren’t the only thing that was missing!
“There’s not even a single drop of blood? None scattered around, and none on the clothes that the corpse is wearing… Wait! This is a trap! Get back!” the heroic spirit warned his companions.
But before they could react, they vanished.
The old woman’s severed head suddenly laughed out loud. “So, you have noticed! Even though I was being quiet, which is unusual for me!”
The one heroic spirit remaining was now sure of what he had initially suspected.
“You… Legion! Judging from that boisterous tone of speech, you must be ‘Valkyrie’ that the Commander mentioned!” he muttered.
“So, you possess information regarding us!” the severed head said in an annoyed tone. “It was a good choice to borrow the appearance of the old woman that we fused with!”
The old woman’s severed head transformed into the severed head of a beautiful woman with white hair and skin… Valkyrie. The pieces of flesh around her crawled towards her and began to fuse with her.
“With Jack’s power, we have sent your companions to a place that isn’t the city! Now then, what will you do? Will you fight us on your own?! Or will you go and help your companions?!” Valkyrie asked tauntingly.
“… The answer to that is obvious,” the heroic spirit muttered as he began running with great speed… towards the city, avoiding Valkyrie. “I’ll ignore you and continue to execute the plan!”
The loss of his companions was great, but something that was always possible during battle. The heroic spirit believed that what he chose to do after his party fell into the trap was more important to focus on.
Even on his own, if he could reach the city… he could cause a great fuss just by opening a hole in the wall. There was no doubt that the Demon King would send even more forces to the city in order to defend it.
But as the heroic spirit abandoned all pretense of stealth and broke into a sprint, a large man stood in his way.
“You, you’re Miles Rouge!” he muttered, stopping in his tracks.
“Oh my. You know my real name, I see,” said Miles.
Vandalieu had not expected that Legion alone would be able to prevent the heroic spirits from approaching the city.
That was why he had positioned Miles and others outside the city as well.
The heroic spirit clicked his tongue in frustration. “… I wanted to use this closer to the city, but I have no choice now.”
He put some distance between himself and Miles.
“‘Heroic Spirit Transformation,’ activate!” he shouted.
His entire body shone brightly, and an intimidating air rose around him.
“With the power of this body alone, I wouldn’t be able to keep up even with a mere Noble-born Vampire, but with my original power… the power of the ‘Rapid Wind Demon Cutter’ Kizelbyne, I will not fall behind!” he declared, drawing two daggers from his belt and facing Miles.
But Miles’ lipstick-covered lips gave a bold smile. “A mere Noble-born Vampire, you say… But it does seem that it would be difficult for me to fight you just like this so I suppose I’ll use my trump card as well. ‘Familiar Spirit Demonfall!’”
A dark-colored light rose from beneath Miles’s feet and enveloped him, causing the heroic spirit to gasp in shock.
“Now then, let’s begin this battle between a servant of a god and the subordinate of the Demon King!” said Miles.
“… You make me sound so terrible,” muttered Vandalieu’s clone, whose voice could only be heard by Miles.

Even though Earl Isaac Morksi stays to die, because he wants to preserve his family, that still makes him one of the few nobles we’ve seen so far, who actually have a backbone, which is appreciated.

I think its logic thought, when people with other god divine blessing use familiar spirit decent light will come from the sky as gods live above the sky. But Van familiar spirit demonfall come from ground since Van its a earth living god.

hmmm the matchups

Alda Gods are more Demon king like that Vand
BeiBei G6
He was certainly not an ‘Elder Dragon Emperor’ that Dragons cowered before, a master of ‘Unarmed Fighting Technique’ who was capable of crushing the spines of Pure-breed Vampires beneath his feet, or a Demon King who devoured evil gods.
If only they knew they would be in so much shock it would be amazing.

I don’t think they would let him in the city if they knew, thought

Haha knowing Van’s companions, they probably train the demonfall descent super often since it’s a way they can converse with a Vandalieu

I don’t get Fitun’s plan. He is well aware of the ennemy’s spacial magic allies. Then why doesn’t he realise that Van can bring all his friends over whenever he wants?? Fituns seems to believe he’s fighting against Van and a few subordinates, when he’s fighting against all of Talosheim’s big figures! He does not even have the advantage of numbers, it’s the contrary.
Chiu ChunLing
He’s basically trying to use the town as a hostage/witness to force Van to fight on unfavorable terms. Which is working, because Van has placed most of his available fighting forces to protect the town, while limiting his own actions to those that can be explained away.
The problem for Fitun is that letting Fitun think he could close the gap in fighting strength with that was part of Van’s plan from the beginning. Fitun has managed to hide a few cards Van didn’t know about, but Van has more hidden trumps is all.
Drackormort
That’s right, in this battle of wits Fitum had or maybe has, a few tricks up his sleeve, but Vandalieu is an expert magician who has more than one complete deck up his sleeve, as well as Yu-Gi-Oh! and magic cards even Pokemon’s, without forgetting his magicgirl’s squad
Hobbes
Van’s MO since Darcia died is to continuously develop, get stronger, & produce so many trump cards that he should have had a Job as a Trading Card Manufacturer by now.
Korath
His plan just doesnt make sense. Van could use the evil god elf girl to get the pure breeds and all the other 13+ rank guys like Godwin and Borkus at any time. Also by now Van has something like 200k vita iirc, so he wouldnt be an insta kill anyways and has some leeway to react and escape.
The only plan that can work is to destroy his reputation, so that the guys in town realize that he is some 15+rank like being in reality, but thats all what it amounts to. To be fair, the only thing that makes sense it to really have plan like to isolate him or wait for the other reincarnated guys to team up and not just 2 grps of 3 right now.
The only smart grp atm is the Asagi grp, that actually has a plan: researching a way to destroy the Demon king fragments and keeping distance for now.

i have a question.. can somebody tell me why lightning categorized as wind-attribute ?
and sorry for my bad english
Renrobt
Well it’s either the wind attribute or fire attribute, but since the explanation for fire attribute is that it controls heat, not fire/plasma directly, that leaves us with wind attribute that controls phenomena that happens in/with air.
If the question is why it isn’t a separate attribute then: no idea. Well not no idea but nothing concrete supported by the story so far: lighting is just too specific to be an attribute by itself.
Chiu ChunLing
Lightning in nature is the result of static built up by wind movement, usually discharged during storms but assuredly present at all times as any experienced aviator will attest (just the friction of air moving over wings produces plenty of static charge even in uncharged layers of the atmosphere).
Korath
Usually attributes like Lightning are combinations of 2 or more main elements in fantasy novels.
mainly, earth, water, fire, wind. sometimes light + dark (space).
earth + fire would be magma
dont ask me what lightning is made of in this novel, but probably something like fire, wind and maybe light.
E.g. World of Warcraft has quite the cohorrent system for it, if you want some examples. Some spells have up to 4 or more elements, quite complex. ^^ There are probably other games and novels with a similar system.

Is dark mode working for others? It ain’t for me when I try to switch to dark mode. It stays white apart from one bit at the top with the text getting lighter.

Tejing
I’m not sure how you think MTL will help a translator work faster. Also, I believe the community here has some nicer resources than that available on discord if people want to read ahead. It bears mentioning though that no spoilers are allowed here in the comments, or in the main death mage channel on discord, so if you’ve read ahead, take care not to spoil it for others.

I stopped at around chapter 182, is he still a child ?
no1
I think people say he is 12 around this time
Valeth
I believe he is getting closer to 13 (I could be wrong).
I do believe that part of the reason we are spending so much time in his childhood is it helps power balance (if there is such a thing in Death Mage), as he will see a massive spike in power during puberty when he gets all his stats to where they are suppose to be.
Also while he is still young it was mentioned after his last growth spurt he is the same height as Zadiris, so he already growing quickly.
Sniperking
thanks
Metazoxan
yeah I’m pretty sure the author is using puberty for free power ups.
So the author will keep Van a kid for as long as possible in order to exploit that growth period.
Plus it just lets them keep having new characters under estimate the “child”.
Tejing
He’s still 11, actually.

Thanks for the new chapter, Yoshi-sama. Really appreciate it.

What? You don’t like sand? <.<
Doc
Are you referring to his spirit form clones here or the Van consciousness’ that appear when his companions invoke the demonfall descent skill? The first would be physical clones while the latter is technically just inside his companions’ head.
Terumi
I gotta be honest I love chapters like these yes they don’t focus on the the big fight for van however it brings in more wonderful world building and lets me fully picture the actual scale of the battle about to unfold while also showing the thoughts, some motivations and actions that those who live in this world work with. So thank you again for this wonderful chapter.
Metazoxan
Generally I agree. But you need a balance of things.
The build up for the “Big fight” has really started to drag and this chapter could have really used at least a little more action.
A lot of the information presented in this chapter wasn’t even knew and was basically characters saying “as you know” over and over which is a cheap way to relay information.
This would have been a MUCH stronger chapter if they had cut down on the repeat information and let some of the side battles get into full swing instead of on the verg of starting.
Again I agree world building chapters are nice but any more stalling on the fight as we’ll be reaching DBZ levels of stalling.
SilverEagleLive
True, it pretty much set up another big fight. I’m sure Darcia and the others will get their own setup, maybe for those other reincarnated or other heroic spirits.
Lord Rin
Well there’s not really much to say about this chapter. It’s still mostly just setting up for the fight with Fitun. Well it’s nice to see that the merchant guy has enough of a sense of responsibility to order his bodyguard Rodriguez to help defend the city. After failing to convince Darcia about setting up a Ghoul brothel, I assumed he’d be like one of those asshole merchants and would try to either not help defend the city or try to flee instead out of pettiness for his plan falling through. Also Earl Morski is willing to fight to defend the city instead of hiding away. Sure part of the reason is due to self-interest that if he does this then the Duke is less likely to punish his family but still. I think my perception of nobles has gotten skewed because of how shit the nobles of the Hartner and Sauron Duchies were.
It was kinda funny how Darcia was trying to lie when she’s not very good at it.
OK so as most of us thought, the old lady was Legion. Valkyrie says they fused with an old lady and borrowed her appearance. I do wonder who the old lady was though. Was it one of the villagers from that village Legion accidentally teleported too? Or maybe one of the Evil God worshipers. It feels like Van wouldn’t approve of them using a villager’s corpse unless they got permission from the spirit of the villager but it would still be weird in my opinion.
Chiu ChunLing
Well, sometimes you get the minor villains who know when to cut their losses.
And Rodriguez doesn’t really even seem like a villain. No matter how batty Edmond’s ‘sacred’ Ghoul brothel plan would be to anyone who understood the obstacles, Rodriguez seems to have simply trusted Edmond to have a sensible business plan. And the idea of allowing Ghouls to peacefully interact with the town to solve their fertility problems probably didn’t seem horrible to him.
Pressuring a cleric to approve of something ‘sinful’ probably doesn’t generally strike him as terribly wrong either, and let’s be realistic, if it was a priest of Alda being pressured to allow Ghouls to get some action in town, we’d probably all cheer.
But he was smart enough to realize that Edmond had made a serious mistake about Darcia and call things off before they went further than Edmond being a bit obnoxious.
And Edmond was smart enough to listen.
Kazza
Ah, the pre-fight is still going strong.
So, Old Lady was indeed Legion. I’m pretty sure we all called it, so there’s not much on that end.
This may say more about me than I should, but does anyone else find nonchalant talking decapitated heads just inherently funny? I guess it’s just the picture of the opponent having to keep their eyes down to see them, which is a little hard to take seriously. Like, if the speaker has an unusually falsetto voice, but still said straight dialogue in a serious fashion. Anyways, that’s my way of saying I found the visual of the boisterous Valkyrie yelling from a head on the ground very funny.
So, this might be way in the future, but the Heroic Spirits sent away are probably not going to be able to rejoin the fight until after Fitun gets Omm-Nomm’d. So, what are their options? They are battle junkies, so I guess they might still try to fight, but wouldn’t it be interesting if they went crawling back to Alda.
Because think about it, every part of this plan hurts Alda in some way, even if they were able to miraculously kill Van. It would be mostly his followers slaughtered by the rampage, and if word got out on what Fitun had done, then Vida’s religion would flourish exponentially.
If Van was dead, he’d probably wave it off with some “greater good/necessary sacrifices” nonsense. But since they’ll fail (granted, don’t know this for certain, not spoiling, just think it’s a safe bet), Alda’s got a choice. Will he seal them for “Thunderclouds Maintenance” (?) or keep them as fighters.
Because this is the test: good or evil, most people can respect those who maintain their own philosophy. Alda has shown clear disrespect for those who don’t follow in his orders or act without his permission/input. Douchebag-ish or not, that’s the clear trend. He’s a control freak, through-and-through.
So if he let’s them be relatively free from punishment, that’s going back on his own values. And not even in the sense of “the greater good.” Whether these guys are strong for gods or not, his plan revolves around champions, not gods with stolen bodies. Especially with Hajime being broken (again, don’t know for sure, just guessing), which prevents him from getting able to do it on a large scale.
Endangering the innocent? Working with evil beings (monsters and dungeons), the very thing Alda wants to purge from this world? Spending battle strength and resources on a failed attack that’ll only make Van stronger if it fails? Doing all of it in secret, against his orders and behind his back? That’s damn near breaking every rule he’s got…
So, if he does allow them to continue, he’s got no ground left from which to challenge Van. Morals, ethics? Yeah, those can be debated and based on perspective, but breaking your own standards is a level of universal evil beyond action. It shows you’re not driven by anything but those sinful feelings deep inside. Power-hunger, greed, and selfishness.
And I know some people will argue that he’s already broken his philosophy when he refused to forgive the evil gods who changed sides, I’ll cut him a little slack on that one, because it wasn’t him who offered the evil gods the chance to turn, it was Zakkart.
If I was a judge ruling over a serial killer, and his defense attorney said, “Yes, he did murder those innocent people, but he was afraid for his own life if he didn’t kill and he in turn killed a bunch of other serial killers on my request. Also, your sister said he’s kind of hot, so she had some of his babies, so she’s good with him, why aren’t you?” I wouldn’t be impressed. Granted, there’s a lot if context removed in that, but I’m saying from his own point of view, I don’t think that’s necessarily hypocritical. Overly simplistic, naive and egocentric? Absolutely.
ExplodingPenguinDood
I would say that on the scenario that some of the thunderbros live to tell the tale of their defeat, Alda would probably still keep them around. They are a fighting force after all and he needs a lot of them when his side faces against Vida’s side. The “innocent” civilians are negligible since they could have been converted to Vida’s side by now. Van is the largest immediate treath rn and thunderbros has more insight to Van’s abilities compared to the outdated one Alda has
Jonathan Hurd
Most likely I think Alda just passes this off as they ‘went too far and should reflect on their actions’, but overall nothing will be done about them. I’m assuming Fitun isn’t making it out of this fight(just my guess) or even if he does he is going to definitely be seriously weakened. So Alda will already be some fighting forces down. Doesn’t really make sense for him to use his own power to weaken his own fighting forces.
I will say I don’t think there’s too much worry about people outside Van and the Gods realizing what Fitun’s group has done. Its not like people are going to believe a random Dhampir kid saying Heroic spirits came down and tried to slaughter a town during a monster rampage. They’d more likely just think some really insane bandits were trying to take advantage of the chaos, or Fitun’s bunch were actually some Evil Gods cultists.
For Alda’s morals… At this point I don’t think he really cares about the fact that they’re sacrificing a town to try and kill the Demon King. That is kind of funny if you think about the reason why Alda and Bellwood wouldn’t accept Zakkarts strat was it would hurt some innocents homelands to return to.
Alda at this point philosophy as I see it is very the Ends justify the Means. If it kills Van I don’t think Alda cares about sacrificing any number of innocents. I mean his current plan is to throw all of humanity that believes in him at Van and then just have who ever’s left rebuild while worshiping him.
Darkhelios
Concerning “people noticing what Fitun’s group has done”, I would like to object a little bit: If Fitun dies, his dungeon will probably stay behind meaning that at least people might be able to deduce where the monsters were coming from. However they won’t know the reason of the rampage… or they might believe that “it’s because Fitun is a battle junkie”. His death might also be read as “Alda punished him”.
And yes, Alda’s morals are… Well… He doesn’t care about his own morals when he wants to. As you say, he & his Champion were against Zakkart’s plan of using a nuke because “It will pollute the lands!”… yet their own plan left this world nearly destroyed and quite polluted (ex: Dark Continent), only a small amount of people left alive… and they’re still unable of dealing with the dangerous dungeons.
In fact, if Alda truly wanted to restore the world as it was before… If he truly wanted to get rid of dungeons, he would try to get close to Vandalieu. Vandalieu can deal with dungeons. Alda can’t. He should know this… after all, he had several thousands of years of being unable to deal with dungeons.
In the end, what he is currently following isn’t his morals. It’s his pride. He wants to be the one who will save the world. He doesn’t want anyone to steal his spotlight. This is why he didn’t follow Zakkart’s plan. This is why he doesn’t see Van as an opportunity to heal his world: Both Zakkart and Van are from his sister’s side. Not his. And this is also why he accepted to become known as the chief of the Founding Gods… even though they used to be equal in rank… and even though currently not a single of his sisters/brothers sided with him…
Jonathan Hurd
If Fitun dies I don’t think anyone needs the dungeon to realize that. There will definitely be a bigger ripple effect than when Yupeon’s spirit clone died. I’m thinking statues of Fitun exploding and maybe some of his priests dying.
Thinking about it I agree with you what motivates Alda is mostly his pride. Though I feel Alda is fighting less to show off/add to his accomplishments and more to defend his decisions. He doesn’t care about helping the world or the people. The only thing Alda wants is to kill every single person and god who disagrees with him. He has to label everyone who disagrees as evil because if they’re not then it was wrong of him to try and kill them to start.
That’s the thing I always find sad with Alda. He is so obsessed with never admitting his sins that he keeps trying to drown it in more sins. I can’t stop killing people because that would insult those we’ve killed! Honestly we need Van to put the mad dog down, imo.
Lord Rin
Well they are super battle junkies like Fitun. For them it really is “We fight and win or die in battle.” There’s no option to flee for them to even consider.
If they by some chance did manage to survive and escape after failing to kill Van, I don’t think Alda would do much to them. Well if they didn’t manage to do anything to Van and his allies or at least uncover some new information about him and his allies then maybe Alda would use the Stakes of Law on them but it’d probably be only for a really short time. Alda is an “Ends Justify The Means” sort of guy and is a hypocrite. Vida herself has said so. As gods they’re not supposed to betray their values but that is exactly what Alda does. His own values and teachings state that if a criminal works to genuinely atone for their crimes then they MUST be forgiven and given a second chance but Alda refused to give a second chance to any of the Evil Gods who turned on Guduranis even though by his own teachings he should have forgiven them and given them a second chance. Or how about his claims that dungeons are evil things that should be eradicated yet he has absolutely no problem making his own dungeon to turn Heinz into his attack dog and wants other gods to send their heroes into dungeons and Devil’s Nests to make them stronger before throwing them at Van. Or for that matter trying to turn all of humanity against Van starting with the Amid Empire despite how he acknowledges that Van is just like any other ruler of a nation and isn’t trying to invade or whatever.
Tejing
I think the heroic spirits were probably sent to Van’s dungeon, so they’ll likely get omm-nomm’d (as you put it) soon right along with Fitun. That’s just my guess though.
Who Cares
You forgot one possibility that seems more likely with every action that Alda takes. He lied about his sphere of influence. It isn’t law, it is tyranny (and the negative tools needed to suppress dissent). It was that either from the beginning and he couldn’t openly behave like a tyrant due to the other gods being strong enough to completely suppress him hence him lying about his domain or the domain he presides over changed during the war.
Starting with punishing Vida for doing as her domain of life dictates. Alda punished her for following the law, just not his law.
Jonathan Hurd
I think Alda’s actions will become more extreme after Van accepts others to join his side. Once it becomes apparent that Van who can eat your soul is not just going to eat everyone the idea of defecting will start to spread. As that happens Alda’s going to start cracking down more extremely and people will start questioning his mantra that Van is pure evil and must be stopped.
Tejing
I agree, this seems plausible. Bashas could be the first stone of an avalanche, as the gods realize that Van is actually pretty forgiving and flexible, and would treat most defectors pretty decently, and Alda’s only plausible response to that trend would be taking an even firmer hardline stance, driving yet more gods to jump ship. Peria and Botin openly supporting Van would also probably contribute to that a lot.
Jonathan Hurd
I think Bashas defection will probably cause the biggest ripples since they have known her for such a long time. Its easy to point at people like Zuruwarn and Rinklent as having gone insane because they were out of the picture for a hundred thousand years and always had a few screws loose, but saying the same about a former colleague who you had worked with for thousands of years is a bit more of a stretch.
Lord Rin
I feel like they’d try to make up some bullshit about how she was really evil all along because she’s a goddess with a so-called gloomy or dark domain. Just them rationalizing any defection so they can keep claiming to be morally right.
WholesomeAF
That must be nice~ I want to summon a mini van too….. Thanks for the chapter…

SilverEagleLive
Another cliff hanger battle to add to the collection.
Metazoxan
Overall … not a good chapter I’m gonna be honest. Still grateful the translator did it as since the story was written with this chapter it would be weird to skip over it. But of all the chapters in this series this one just felt pointless.
I mean we already spent like 2 chapters building up this fight and going over how no one besides Van’s group stood a chance.
So why did we spend another entire chapter going over the same thing? Really just feels like needless fluff when we could have just gone right to at least some of the side battles this chapter.
Townperson B
This arc is boring in general, it is just to get rid of a few idiots.
Metazoxan
I’d say getting rid of the last evil pure breed vampire and full avenging his father was fairly significant.
That being said now we’re spending a lot of time building up this god army that is clearly out matched. I mean Van has no much leasure in this fight he’s more worried about how to not blow his cover rather than actually winning.
It might be more dangerous if Vitun had any skills that could counter Van but his Newfound brainwash skill won’t affect Van at all and Van can already basically one shot evil gods So a “warrior god” who hasn’t had a real challenge since he became a god isn’t likely to put up much of a real fight. In terms of Raw power this will be a bigger fight than with Gundaris’s shadow but that fight was a complete joke.
The ONLY way Van could end up in a tough spot is if a third party like Murakami jumps in at the right moment. But even that will only force Van to get serious.
Overall this just doesn’t feel like a fight that warrants this much build up.
WholesomeAF
Hmmm… Tbh, I think you’re too late to realise the author love this style of narrative… And having gone this far I can’t seem to hate it…
Metazoxan
Oh no I know the author likes the build up. But this is getting to be a little much.
This chapter was mostly repeat information. I’m not saying the chapter needed to be ALL ACTION. But the author is going a bit too far with the stalling.
Dr. Steel
It wouldn’t be so bad if we didn’t have to wait for the next chapter. So if we were reading it after the arc was fully translated for example it would be fine, but once you’ve caught up and you wait and wait and then it’s a filler several times in a row it kinda hurts.
Jonathan Hurd
I understand and agree that some serious boss fight action would be fun after all the setup, but this is kind of a necessary problem when you have as many characters and are as big as Death Mages story. These filler chapters are necessary to keep the scope of the fight in order and also so we know where different people have been positioned.
This chapter also kind of helps us get something of a grasp of different towns people and their views of the coming fight and Van.
I will say if we completely skipped these chapters it would take a great deal away from the story overall and the world wouldn’t feel as vast or detailed otherwise.
Doc
I don’t think the complaint is there shouldn’t be these kind of character/world building chapters. It’s that there’s a delicate balance between building up and moving the plot forward and I agree this Fitun arc has been pushing that balance just over the edge of dragging on.
The Birkine arc had to essentially introduce all of the Morksi characters, the orphanage, and why Van is spending so much time here yet it still moved along at a sensible enough pace where meaningful plot developments were happening, if not every every chapter, at least every other chapter.
Meanwhile for this Fitun arc we’ve now spent several chapters just establishing who’s here, what they’re thinking about, and why they’re thinking those things. Unlike with Birkine who was tied to Van’s father’s death who his mother loved, there’s no real stakes here. A lot of these characters can be reduced to their core elements and be pushed together into a single “setup” chapter.
Tejing
It’s not just about knowing what’s happening, but knowing how various characters are involved in what’s happening, and how they’re thinking about things. Given the scale of this story, I think without these kinds of chapters we’d feel a lot more disconnected from everything.
ObserverBias
Likely because, “as you know” from the fight with Birkyne and the multitude of ‘evils gods’ he’s killed or consumed, as well as the part where it’s been, what, several dozen chapters since he broke Alda’s laws that held Vida in the sorry state she had been in with light effort (for him); because we’ve seen all these things, it was never a question of which fighting force is likely to win in a scrap, but instead, whether or not Van and his forces can win WHILE underselling their abilities.
Mind, if it needs reminding, Van and his forces are still yet unaware that a portion of this fight is with subordinate gods and their leader himself. Legion and Miles are the closest to realizing this (having encountered one directly and seen his “Heroic Spirit” activation), but are still yet unaware. Those aside, the people of the duchy (from the duke, to the soldiers, to an evacuation procedure) “still exist” and factor into why the fight is happening (at this time and location), and may yet continue to unintentionally make things “difficult” for their allies.
Togglingon

Thanks for the chapter, And happy reading.
Eddy
Mixed feelings with this master of magicians, usually one looks at those who try to oppose or take advantage of Vandeliu or any innocent as enemy or bad, but I can’t say that it is at all, in the end with the whole guild it is so much a site of research in the search for truth and progress (which means little ethics) as a business (the creation of tools and weapons), in addition to the fact that upon learning about the poison, his first reaction was curiosity and his second was of regret for not using it into battle, though the fact that I didn’t doubt every word I say Darcia is a disappointment to Rinkclent
ObserverBias
What does Darcia have to do with Ricklent, here?
Dr. Steel
He worded it wrong, but he’s saying the mage guy, following Ricklent’s teachings, should have doubted her words that didn’t have any basis and were kinda suspicious. Though in my opinion, he had the evidence that it existed in that the dragons were attacking each other, and they are in too much of a life-or-death situation to worry about that.
Chiu ChunLing
Most of what Darcia said is actually true, just misleading.
Even the fact that he knows how to mix poisons that can confuse high-rank monsters is true, though the original expertise was learned in Origin.
As is the fact that she doesn’t really know all the details.
Alex-dono
does anyone else picture ouki from kingdom whenever Miles makes an appearance?
a_really_original_name
I’ve always pictured nappa for some reason
ObserverBias
“… The answer to that is obvious,” the heroic spirit muttered as he began running with great speed… towards the city, avoiding Valkyrie. “I’ll ignore you and continue to execute the plan!”
Who is this mans, and why does he have to be the one fight junkie to be cautious? Love to see it, and I gather he has an actual name, but it’s a shame Fitun got to him first; probably would have been a decent heroic spirit for Farmaun McBooster Gold.
The heroic spirit clicked his tongue in frustration. “… I wanted to use this closer to the city, but I have no choice now.”
And he throws down max effort as soon as running and caution aren’t options? Why are you on the side of the “We’ll probably lose but we gon scrap lol” god?!
Eddy
is that it is rare in these stories to find someone who acts normally within their range, not being provoked by people thousands of years younger than them and trying to follow the plan while adapting to contingencies. The funny thing is that all in all, Fitun and his battle addicts are half the brains of Alda’s faction, the other half are what they are thinking of betraying her
Togglingon
Who is her?
Nineroad?
Or are you calling Alda a female?
Eddy
a no, translation error, but if we talk about the triadores by consideration the two suspects are women, a goddess called Bashas and is being guided and the goddess of flow which has an unknown teacher
Irazori
So fitun created his own transformation system? Must be an extension of familiar spirit descent, but only for aldiots that overshadowed their hosts. Time for the massacre to reach phase 2.
Togglingon
Nope, it was explained earlier.
It’s them litterally taking over the body of believers, and then the ability “Heroic Spirit Transformation” is them accessing their original power.
Sinfulmass
Same
Doc
As Togglingon pointed out, Fitun used Hajime’s puppeteer power to essentially suppress the wills of his victims allowing Fitun’s heroic spirit buddies to possess their bodies. This means the heroic spirits are limited to the skills and ranking of the hosts they inhabit (which is why Fitun had them train up in a B ranked dungeon).
But when they invoke heroic spirit descent they essentially fully take over the host overwriting the host body’s skills and capability with their original self.

Poor Darcia, having to make up all those lies. It’s not exactly her forte, but she made it work.
So the “Old Woman” appearance wasn’t made-up, but taken from a real person. I guess that’s the Encroachment Fusion skill. Did they fuse in a new personality, or just their appearance? I’m guessing it was one of the villagers from that slaughtered village or something.

Irazori
That makes sense. It’s more likely that they just fused for the appearance of the corpse. The souls probably naturally dissipated by the time Pluto and Doug arrived to deliver vengeance to the evil god cult.
Jonathan Hurd
The bodies were pretty fresh when Legion came across them. So I think at least some of the souls were still around with Legion. I think Legion took all the remaining souls and bodies with them to Van though. Probably the old womans original Soul decided they didn’t want to use their old body, or Van agreed to give her a new one, so Legion could use her appearance.
Eddy
I doubt it, Legion is something more complex than simply pasting souls and I also doubt that they can completely keep the appearance (remember that the appearance of Legion is closely associated with their identity and personal image, who knows the danger of changing it too much), perhaps one at a time, but maybe if they have access to the memories of the copses they absorb, even if it is the part stored in the brain
